Have you often thought to yourself how YOU can help change the world?
Well… founders Zach and Brian did just that when they created the beloved organization, Love Your Melon. The company began with a simple idea in an entrepreneurship class at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Inspired by TOMS Shoes buy one, get one program, they set out to design a similar company that gave back to children battling cancer.
On October 22, 2012 Love Your Melon officially opened its doors and Zach and Brian had a vision of where they wanted it to go. They began by purchasing 400 hats, 200 of which were sold out in the first three days while the other 200 were donated to children battling cancer. From hospital visits to homes and Ronald McDonald Houses, each hat was delivered in person by college students dressed up like super heroes. In April of 2015 the company had started its donations and in the first eight months they had donated over a million dollars to pediatric cancer research while also offering support to families of cancer patients. As of this year college students have donated over 70,000 hats in person across the United States.
National Event Director and close friend of Zach and Brian, Alex Meysman took time to share his personal involvement and how in the last year and a half of his time with the company he has seen a tremendous growth. During his time he has set up over 1,000 superhero adventure events across the country and just this past year on National Superhero day they had 600 events, 70-80 hospital visits scheduled and over 14,000 hats personally delivered!
Meysman tells Country Music Minute that he can remember packing hats in boxes when the company first started and now they have a top notch warehouse and distribution center. He states, “Nothing is impossible, you just have to work hard for it.”
From start to finish each Love Your Melon beanie is made with love and when you purchase one of these hats you impact a child with cancer. Meysman says, “It’s a community and it’s something that everyone can be a part of. Cancer takes a toll not only on the child but the family as well. At the end of the day it provides a smile for a child and for those purchasing.” The company started with its signature item, the beanie (which by the way is super comfortable) and now offers items like coffee mugs, baseball caps, tumblers and key chains to purchase. Celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher, Kacey Musgraves, and most recently, country duo Big Kenny and John Rich of Big and Rich have helped in supporting the brand.
